Akal collaborated with the Central Government of India on the development of the e-CARe portal, a transformative solution that has revolutionised the process of mortal remains repatriation.
The Client
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) is the apex government body responsible for formulating and implementing health policies and programs in India. With a mission to ensure the well-being and health of all citizens, MoHFW plays a pivotal role in shaping the healthcare landscape of the nation.
Project Overview
The process of repatriating the mortal remains of Indians living abroad is an ineffective one. This was identified by the government, and hence, the initiative to launch the e-CARe (e-clearance for after-life remains) portal was undertaken. It aimed to expedite the process of repatriation of mortal remains of Indian nationals who pass away abroad.
Our Solutions
Key features of the portal include:
- Centralised Platform: The portal is a centralised platform for submitting necessary documents and obtaining approvals for repatriation.
- Nodal Officers: Designated nodal officers from the Airport Health Organization ensure round-the-clock monitoring and fast-track approvals.
- Document Submission: Applicants are required to submit scanned copies of essential documents, including the death certificate, embalming certificate, NOC from the Indian Embassy or consulate, and cancelled passport of the deceased.
- Two Provisions: The portal caters to both bringing dead bodies from abroad and repatriating mortal remains, ensuring seamless coordination and transparency throughout the process.
- Communication Channels: Information updates are communicated via email, text, and WhatsApp messages to all stakeholders involved, including consignees, airlines, and health officials.
The Impact and Implementation

- Enhanced transparency among the stakeholders
- Simplified communication with quick dissemination of information
